If you've ever had to make a pitch deck, you know how difficult it is to balance brevity, messaging, and staying power.

The pitch deck that earned Beehiiv it's 2.6 million dollar seed round in 2021 is a master class in funding proposals, and it has a lot to teach the world about pitching just about anything.

They recently made the pitch deck publicly available, and I took the opportunity to read and analyze it so you don't have to.

Whether you're a startup pitching investors, a salesperson pitching new business, or a marketer pitching campaign ideas, get ready for a crash course in rhetorical persuasion.

Nail The Value Proposition

The deck starts with a clear and specific value claim.

Here is the first slide:

This simple statement becomes the de facto thesis of the entire presentation.

The rest of the deck is spent masterfully backing up each aspect of this one sentence, and adding weight to it by demonstrating the growth potential of the newsletter industry.

The second slide uses simple iconography to expand this value proposition and build it into a more in depth description of the newsletter world as it stood at the time.

Here's a TLDR of those points:

- The creator economy was is exploding

- Email newsletters are growing in popularity

- Existing newsletter platforms leave a lot to be desired

- Many creators can't monetize by charging subscribers

- The Beehiiv team already built an awesome system for The Morning Brew

Lesson: Succinctly state your core value proposition upfront to anchor the rest of your pitch.

Paint a Picture of the Market

On slide 3, Beehiiv uses diagrams to show the existing options for creators or all types.

They split this into two categories: ad-supported and subscription-led.

The visual implies a specific conclusion: none of the newsletter platforms were ad-supported at the time. Only social networks and streaming platforms.

They throw in some top-line numbers about the creator economy in general:

American creators generated ~$7 Billion in 2017
The creator economy was (is?) growing by 10-15% year over year.

In the next slide, they focus in on newsletters specifically. With several platforms available at the time, the space was growing and in obvious need of differentiation in the solutions market.

They then use a table with checklists to demonstrate the feature parity of their tool in comparison to Revue, Substack, Medium, Mailchimp, and other solutions.

Of course, Beehiiv is the only solution that checks all of the boxes in this table.

Lesson: Use data and visuals to vividly depict the opportunity.

Expose Vulnerabilities

the next slide tears down the then-market-leader, Substack.

The primary issue they found still exists to this day:

Creators pay Substack a percentage of their revenue.

To smaller bloggers and newsletter writers, this has never been a problem.

But for creators with bigger subscriber numbers, this can mean paying thousands of dollars per month to deliver your newsletter.

Beehiiv's pitch revolves around the idea that many of the most successful creators would love to switch to a powerful tool that charged a flat rate.

And they we're right.

Lesson: Reveal critical weaknesses in competing solutions or ideas to position yours as the answer.

Showcasing Traction

After they break down the problem with Substack, Beehiiv uses hard data to show just how big of an opportunity this tool had.

Slide 8 highlights key traction metrics like waitlist signups, conversion rates, and NPS. This shows there is demand and validates their solution.

They also use positive customer quotes praising the platform's ease of use. Customer validation is hugely powerful, whether you're pitching to investors or new prospects.

Lesson: Flaunt metrics and testimonials to concretely validate your claim

Describe What You Have

Now that we have established that the creator economy is a huge growth sector, and have outlined the issues with incumbent platforms, we see a very simple and stripped down listing of the product features, which boil down to just 4 core areas:

build
monetize
analyze
grow

In the following slide, they layout what they are attempting to emulate and replace within a creator's tech stack.

Lesson: Boil down your solution to its essence in a simplified, visual overview.

Tell The Future

In just a few slides, Beehiiv covers the roadmap and vision of their company with succinct writing and clear visuals.

Namely, they illustrate their dual-stream income model, in which revenue comes from SAAS subscriptions and ad monetization, then they use a simple chart to demonstrate their financial projections.

Finally, they flesh out the vision for the company with screenshots of the early product's demo version and a timeline of growth that covers year following their founding.

Lesson: Share projections and your vision to illustrate future potential.

Who Is Pitching?

To fully cement this excellent pitch, the presentation shifts to a "meet the team" slide which appeals to the expertise of Beehiiv's two founders.

Both technical, and both with extensive experience at newsletters (both worked building Beehiiv as an internal tool for Morning Brew) this slide helps secure the reliability of the claims made earlier in the deck.

Lesson: For many pitches, highlight your team's expertise and authority to drive the point home.

State Your Ask

The final slide is a straightforward description of what the Beehiiv team was looking for.

They wanted $1.3 Million to hire a team of 10 employees and provide 18 months of runway and overhead costs.

Lesson: Clearly state your ask and reasoning to provide a definitive call to action.

The Lessons

Beehiiv's successful funding pitch provides invaluable insight for anyone looking to persuasively present an idea, product, or vision.

By nailing the value prop, vividly depicting the market opportunity, exposing competitor weaknesses, flaunting traction, simplifying their offering, illustrating future potential, touting team expertise, and clearly stating the ask, they made an airtight case for investment.

While specifics may differ by context, this strategic approach of establishing credibility, urgency, and value can serve as a model for crafting pitches that inspire action in any domain.

The Beehiiv deck exemplifies the power of brevity, visuals, and narrative flow in developing compelling pitches that deliver results.
